Tesla Solar Roofs

I am Evan Carroll and I am a senior at Northwood School. The new invention I learned about was Tesla's Solar Roof. Tesla states that the sun gives enough energy in an hour to supply the planet for a year so they wanted to start to tap into this.

They created a roof that has solar panels built in. They look like normal tiles but really they are giving energy to the entire home. There are many different models of tiles to choose from so they can work with any home design. Overall the idea seems very interesting. I want to know when this will come to market and if they will continue this idea for large city buildings instead of just homes.

Refudrinks

Problem: Refugees maybe missing daily nutrients, and may not have clean drinking water.

Solution: A bottle like water filter with an attached nutritional powder container.

Precedents

1. Brita water filter:  "Brita water filter has a double action

  • The activated carbon removes substances that may impair taste, such as chlorine and chlorine compounds (where present).
  • The ion exchange resin used reduces the carbonate hardness (limescale), accordingly softening tap water, and reduces metals, such as copper and lead, that can occur as a result of domestic installation.

It is noted that BRITA cartridge is not designed to remove fluoride. While naturally occurring fluoride is present in fresh water, some cities and water companies add sodium fluoride or hydrofluorosilicic acid to their water." (from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brita)

2. Herbalife meal replacement powder:  Herbalife is a supplement company with products for overall health. The ingredients may include protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals and, in some cases, caffeine. There are four elements to quick-start: Formulas 1, 2 and 3 and Herbal Tea Concentrate. (from https://www.dietspotlight.com/herbalife-review)

First prototype:

Our first prototype is made of a bottle that is 20cm tall (including the powder container 5cm tall) * 9 cm * 9cm , (Weight) 300g. It is easy carried, and can hold 1.5L water at once. It has a plug-in powder container with its own cover, which can also be carried separately. Users can collect rain, snow, lake and River water. Our design does not support salt water use, yet.  Volume of bottle could be changed depending on different needs. The nutritional powder easily dissolves at room temperature. Nutritional ingredients could be different depending on regional needs and personal dietary needs. The basic ingredients could be similar to  Herbalife meal replacement powder. The powder could be saved in the different compartment for a long period.

For our second prototype we will be more intentional with the aesthetics of our design, select a better material, and make our invention more efficient.

Refugee Community Shelter

By: Evan Carroll, Fredrik Kristoffersson and Gustaf Arfelt

Problem: Our problem is that some refuges do not have stable shelters. The tents may be cold, leak when it rains, lack electricity. We also want to bring these people together in a community where they can help each other out more.

Solution: The Ref Com Shelter can house many refugees. The home has 7 bedrooms, each being able to house 4 people. There is also a community space that would have electricity and common core appliances, such as a refrigerator and a washing machine. These appliances will be powered by solar panels on the roof of each home. The homes also have a community bathroom.

Our ideas provides for a community aspect, we want to help refugees come together to better their future. We believe the Ref Com Shelter will also combat loneliness.

Precedents: There are some precedents that we have taken as inspiration from, such as the shelter from IKEA.

This simple idea from IKEA will be a huge help for refugees in the world. This shelter is easy to set up, and it will protect them from the cold winters or water leaking in when it rains. This shelter can provide electricity from the solar panels on the roof. The heat will stay inside the shelter because of the insulation in the walls. It is not expensive to produce and is easy to ship around the world. It comes in a box with all the material to build the whole shelter.

First Prototype: Our first prototype is made out of cardboard and glue. We have tried to make the prototype as simple as possible. We want these refuges to get closer, that's the idea with the community shelter. They can interact with each other, they can help each other out with their professions.

2nd Prototype: We will use more durable material, such as wood, nails, metal, and 3D printed objects. We will also create a full complex of the shelters to show what a small community could look like. A separate larger individual home will be created in better detail. This will show how the home can work.

March 29, update on our progress. We are now finished with the second prototype. The changes we made are more durable material such as wood instead of cardboard. Hinges for the roof so it can fold and show the interior. We painted the roof dark blue and the house white.

Refushoes

By: Danielle, Sabryna, and Lauren

Problem: Syrian refugees are dealing with harsh weather conditions while wearing inappropriate footwear for the weather.

Solution: Our solution is to make an impactful video to raise awareness for the refugee's struggle and to help them receive the appropriate footwear they need for the weather.

Precedents: The ALS Ice Bucket challenge is a campaign to spread awareness about ALS. People dump a bucket of ice cold water on their heads and challenge others to do it as well. If they do not accept the challenge then they should donate to the ALS foundation. Toms is a brand that with every purchase, toms donates a pair of shoes to someone in Africa. Project 7 is a gum and mint brand that gives back to 7 elements in need. (Save the earth, house the homeless, feed the hungry, quench the thirsty, heal the sick, teach them well, and hope for peace).

First Prototype: We started a social campaign to raise awareness for Syrian Refugees with inadequate footwear by creating a video where we challenged ourselves to stand outside in the snow, barefoot, for a minute.

How will we make our second prototype better? We will improve our project by first including background information about Syrian Refugees. Then we will come up with a script so our words flow better and make our message clearer. Also, we will pick a type of boot/shoe we will be donating. We also want to team up with a boot company like Toms or Sorel and do a if you buy our shoe we will donate to refugees type of thing.

Second Prototype: For our second prototype we created a campaign video, in our video we address why we are standing in the snow and the significance of the time, 65 seconds for the 65 million refugees.  We now have a logo for our campaign, we open our video with the logo.  We also got other kids around the school to take the challenge and stand in the snow.

How will our third and final prototype be better? For our final prototype we will clarify where our money is going, what kind of footwear the refugees are receiving and how to donate.  Along with clarification, we need to make so edits with the way the video flows and change the music.

Bed Maker

By: Jojo Chen, Fredrik Kristoffersson, Gustaf Arfelt

Problem: It takes too much time and effort to make your bed in the morning.

Solution: We have invented the Bed Maker that makes it easy in the morning to make your bed without much effort.

We have been looking into some different precedents, for example, different types of pull-down screens such as a projector screen and also curtains, and also how the mechanism in the measuring tape works.

Our first prototype is made out of cardboard, tape, clothes pins, a dowel rod, a plastic wheel, cloth and glue. The Bed Maker has a wheel on the side of the dowel rod that spins to roll the bed linen over the bed.
